Red Leap Theatre is one of the country’s most dynamic performance companies, producing epic visual theatre.
Taking inspiration from Janet Frame’s rich imagery and poetry to create a multi-disciplinary dreamscape. Their adaption of Owls Do Cry uses live music, song, poetry, dynamic movement, projections, and soundscape to celebrate Frame’s work. This extraordinary tale is transformed into an exciting, devised performance through their signature physical and visual styles, revealing Frame’s still pertinent insights into society.
Award-winning director Malia Johnston (RUSHES, Movement of the Human) was joined by some of Aotearoa’s best creative minds to explore the themes of Frame’s novel, of resilience through struggle and of living life with open hands and hearts. Together they have drawn on the treasures of books and the pleasure of reading to bring this extraordinary piece of New Zealand literature to the stage.
"I’m left with sheer joy of witnessing images of beauty, light and poetry."
