This captivating four-concert series is presented by the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and curated by pianist Tom McGrath. It features DSO players, joined by well known Ōtepoti musicians as well as guests from the NZSO, including Dunedin born flautist Bridget Douglas.
Alongside a rich selection of complementary works, the series features French music from the early 20th century, with a particular focus on Les Six, a group of 6 composers known for their inventive spirit and bold incorporation of Jazz. Each 50 minute concert offers the listeners an intimate and stimulating early evening experience, filled with expressive performances of both familiar masterpieces and hidden treasures.
Trailblazing Works By Amy Beach, Lili Boulanger And Germaine Tailleferre
An evening of vibrant, expressive chamber music celebrating three pioneering composers of the early 20th-century. The programme opens with beautifully contrasting pieces by Lili Boulanger, who despite her early death, is regarded as one of the most gifted and influential French composers of her generation. Germaine Tailleferre brings her own flair with a selection of charming flute pieces and a colourful piece for piano trio, reflecting her versatility within the French modernist movement. The concert concludes with the substantial and imaginative Theme and Variations for Flute and String Quartet op.80 by Amy Beach.
